I just read an interesting post about embracing new technology. It was a simple story with a powerful message.

“Once upon a time there was a small business working away quite nicely. Business was steady, customers were happy and they had been doing things in the same way for many years. Then their suppliers started to use new technology. They didn’t see any need to change because they were not “suppliers” and they had personal relationships with their customers.

Then their customers started to use new technology. They didn’t see the need to change because they were sure that their customers would respect their strong personal relationship.

They noticed that some of their competitors had started to use new technology. They didn’t see the need to change because they had been doing things in a the same way for many years.”

Then their customers started to deal with their competitors because they were both using new technology.

In a business environment, playing “catch-up” is the last thing you want to do because with things moving forward so quickly, once you start playing catch up, you always will be playing catch up.
