First of all, who is Fred Wilson? Well, he’s a venture capitalist based in New York and a pretty successful one at that. What’s more (with apologies to any venture capitalists who happen to be reading this post) unusually, he seems to know what he’s talking about 🙂

Fred (sorry Mr Wilson) guested at the Tech Crunch recent event in New York and was asked which companies did he think would be “Top of the tree” of the next 5 years, his answer surprisingly, did not include Apple who presently hold the top spot as “the biggest tech company in the world”, but would in fact be Google, Facebook “….and one that we’ve never heard of.”

Interesting answer.

Hard to disagree with his statement that Google will be top dog sometime over the next 5 years.

Surprising that Facebook will continue to grow, in the face of an apparently disappointing floatation and a growing feeling that, Facebook is being viewed as “less cool” than some of the newer emerging social media players.

Intriguing that he’s predicting a company, that “we’ve never heard of” at the moment will emerge to be one of the top 3 largest tech companies in the world over the next 5 years! That is a massive emergence and growth along the lines of another Facebook or Twitter or even bigger!

At this point we wondered if Fred has ever heard of Collabor8online 🙂 .. Could we be the company he is thinking of? We hope so!

One final thought, Fred didn’t mention Microsoft. We’re not surprised because, regular readers of this Blog will know that we don’t really feel that Microsoft are a significant player any more (and evidently neither does Fred!) .Unfortunately and by way of explanation of our earlier comments about venture capitalists, the last time we were invited to speak to a group of VCs, they didn’t seem to share our view the Microsoft no longer ruled the roost and even suggested that SharePoint would be a significant barrier for us.

In 5 years, I think I’m right in saying that we’ve lost one sale to SharePoint.

So, thank you Fred for renewing our faith in Venture Capitalists.
