Most businesses use websites for publishing information. By their very definition websites tend to be “public” that is to say open to all however, many organisations recognized but while some information may be freely released into the “public domain” some information is best kept private or least restricted to people within the organisation, consequently companies began to develop their own intranets, that were available only to people within the walls of the organisation.

An extranet allows a user to logon to a system with a unique user name and password. Furthermore, there username can define exactly what parts of the site they have access to. This allows sites to be essentially “invitation only” in that only users given a username and password will be allowed to access the site at all, certain sections of the site may even be reserved exclusively for managers, administrators or supervisors.
